Beeripmo Walk

Published:

My nine year old son was inspired by a recent visit to Tasmania's Cradle Mountain National Park. He wanted to the the Overland track but I told him he'd need to get a few walks under his belt before we do that one. After searching around, I decided on Beeripmo Walk. The track reports indicated that it was a good introduction to bushwalking.

The weather was quite good. Sunny, low 20's with a cool breeze. Along the way, there were plenty of butterflies filling the air which added to the magic.

The startThe walk starts with a steep climb up Raglan Falls. There is a steady climb further up towards Cave Hill. On the climb up, there are good views of the surrounding farmland. The track then follows around Cave Hill with great views of nearby Mt Langi Ghiran. There is a steady climb up to the base of The Sugarloaf. From there it is steep climb around the Sugarloaf. The track then joins a fire break track taking you to Beeripmo Camp.

Beeripmo Camp is sheltered and well appointed. There are pit toilets and a water tank. The sign on the tank says to boil the water for 5 minutes before using. There are several camp sites with nice flat ground, tables and a fire place.

From the camp the walk follows the fire break track to Freemans Track Road. From there it climbs up to Mugwamp Camp and the turn off track to Mount Buangor. The walk from Mugwamp meanders through forest crossing Mt Cole Road. It then follows an easy walk along Long Gully. It leaves Long Gully and winds around the hillside. The path is narrow and had suffered some minor storm damage when we went through. From Grevillea Track, it is a steady walk of gentle grades and wide paths back to Richards.

Is it a good walk for beginners? That depends. Beeripmo has a a lot going for it. It has plenty of variety. The track is well marked and quite well formed which makes navigation quite easy. It is quite steep in parts which makes it hard going. Experienced walkers will have no problems with Beeripmo whatsoever. First timers should have at least a moderate level of fitness or be prepared to take regular breaks and be prepared to add extra time to reach your destination, especially on the first day. All in all, I'd recommend Beeripmo for beginners and look forward to doing it again.
