Werribee River Campground Nov 2024
Published:
I took the bike up to Werribee River Campground for a weekend an overnight stay. The campground is a great spot for a weekend getaway and the river would be a great place to cool off in the summer.

I took the train to Ballan and set heading out on the e-bike.
Vline trains make it quite easy to to take your bike on the train. The bike fits in the bike rack at the end of the carriage. The bike rack is quite easy to use and the bike is held securely in place.

The ride went through town, crossing the bridge over the freeway and then on narrow country roads. Blakeville road and then turning on Blakeville Bunding Road. Google sent me me up Mt Hope Track. It was mostly well formed. There were a couple of places with deep ruts left by 4x4s. Then I went on to McGee's Road until Carrol Track.

On arrival at the campground, I set up the tent and then went for a walk along the river. The place has a large grassy area. There are plenty of secluded spots to set up a tent but I imagine it will get very busy.

I was camped near the river. It was quite nice to hear the sound of water running over the rocks.

The rocks look to to be volcanic. They weren't the usual smooth river rocks. They were quite sharp and jagged. Geologically quite young.

Looking at the river, and the large clearing, I wondered what this place was to out first nations people. It would have been a great place to camp. The river would have been a great source of food. Clearing were often created by controlled burning. The grassy area would have been a great place to hunt kangaroos.

A kangaroo was grazing in the grassy area. They usually are in groups but the others were clearly out of sight. There was plenty of evidence of kangaroos in the area with droppings scattered around the grass.
The camp itself was reasonably quiet. There was nobody here when I arrived. A couple of other groups arrived later in the day. The campground is quite large so there is plenty of space for everyone.
There is also a mineral spring in the area. Carroll's Spring. The water is alkaline for spring water with a pH of 7.62. It is said to have sweet, slightly metallic with a dash of seltzer. I didn't try it.
